Regular maintenance of proper and thorough oral hygiene is very important for each one of us to keep our mouth healthy and prevent sickness. Some of the health concerns caused by not being able to perform regular oral hygiene are tooth decay, gum disease, mouth sores and tonsil stones to name a few. These are the most common threats to our oral health if we are not careful of regularly brushing our teeth. In this post, we are going to talk about the nature of tonsil stones and how they come to be.
Tonsil stones, also called tonsillolith are calciferous formations that attach to the inner walls of the throat. These are formed with the combination of food debris and particles, saliva and bacteria, all together reacting to become tiny, stone like particles. These are usually found in the back of the throat or behind the tonsils and sometimes feel like foreign objects to the throat. A person who has tonsil stones may feel pain and discomfort depending on the size of the formed stones.
Although tonsil stones do not directly cause tonsillitis or any throat infection, the bacteria that have lodged to the stones usually does. If the tonsil stones are not removed immediately from the throat, the bacteria in it will spread to other areas of the throat and cause infection. A simple sore throat may occur and develop to chronic tonsillitis if not addressed immediately. If tonsil stones are present, these will make the situation worse since it will be difficult to remove them when the inner walls of the throat are swollen.
If you have found out that there are tonsil stones on your throat, then the first thing that you will ask is how to get rid of them. First of all, it is not hard to remove tonsil stones as long as you do not have a swollen throat. Second, tonsilloliths do not provide grave health issues to the body. You can use a cotton swab dipped in warm water to dislodge the stones from your throat and you can do this yourself.
Another way to remove stones is by frequent gargling of antiseptic gargle or even just water. The movement of the water or antiseptic gargle against the throat wall will help in dislodging the tonsil stones. If you opt for water, drinking plenty will help in flushing the stones and you won’t even feel just dislodged from your throat.
